Our Story

The Young Shepherds was founded on December 26, 1996, after a profound vision experienced by its founder, Dr. Kenneth A. Masungu. At the time, Dr. Masungu, a South Sudanese teacher, was teaching at Sabah High Secondary School in Libya. He became seriously ill with pneumonia and spent five days in intensive care at El Faransh Hospital in Tripoli. During his hospitalization, while in a state of reverie, he experienced a vision. This vision revealed the immense suffering of the people of South Sudan during the two decades of civil war, as well as a hopeful future of economic development after the war’s end.

Following his recovery, Dr. Masungu and his family relocated to Cairo, Egypt, and subsequently immigrated to the USA. Driven to realize his vision, he organized a group of South Sudanese refugees living in Egypt, who volunteered to help carry out the organization’s first mission. In 1997, with the volunteers’ assistance, The Young Shepherds collected a substantial amount of used clothes in Cairo and shipped it to people in need in Mundri County, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. This marked the organization’s first effort to assist people back home during the civil war. At that time, many had little to wear, amongst other necessities.
